On my way back to India last month I spent a week in Shen Zhen, China visiting an electric unicycle factory and ordering a bunch of Android tablets. Through my association with Code For India I am now on a team competing in the Learning X-Prize. I am super excited about this as I feel India has much to gain from the tablet education content and software the Learning X-Prize will pull together.

I want to get experience puting tablets in front of kids to see how they respond to currently available education content. So I need tablets. So I need to figure out what tablet.

From Android Devices

First I wanted to see what the bottom of the market looks like. I found this tablet on TaoBao for about $35. It is manufactured by SKCBO has a QuadCore A33 processor and is running Android 4.4.2. At first glance it is remarkably good. Many Chinese Android devices have the problem of running a modified version of Android with lots of Chinese text and Chinese specific apps that can’t be removed. The SKCBO seems remarkably clean of this kind of cruft. The screen is unremarkable but passable.
